In your January 2007 issue of Sport Pilot magazine, Earl C. Downs implies in his article "Can We Talk?" that with the endorsement from FAR 61.325 comes the ability to fly in Class B, C, and D airspace. Now, is that only with reference to radio work, or does it also include the provisions concerning Part 91 (61.325 (c)?
I have received an endorsement for Class D, but was told by that instructor and another that each class is to receive its own endorsement and that 61.325 is not a blanket endorsement for all three. Part of my confusion is a sentence that reads, "However, a sport pilot is not required to have flown into each of these classes of airspace to receive the endorsement for all of them." The word endorsement is singular, not "...endorsements for all of them."
So, my question is, do I have an endorsement for Class C to go along with my stated Class D endorsement? Or, will Class C have to be endorsed separately? |

I am a retired SMEL instrument pilot who last received a 3rd class medical certificate in Feb 2006. Since I have a medical condition, the FAA requires me to "renew" the certificate at 6 month intervals instead of annually.
#1 Am I currently legal to fly under LSA? The certificate has never been "revoked, withdrawn,..." by the FAA. I assume that I am.
#2 If I were to continue with getting a 3rd class medical and failed an examination, what would I have to do to fly legally under LSA? I think that I read that I would have to successfully pass a 3rd class medical exam. Seems like a Catch 22 situation. If that is true, with an aging pilot, it would be better just to fly under LSA.
Great info in the forum. It has cleared up a lot of issue regarding LSA.
Thanks. EAA#0599757 |

Clarification please. My partner and I have been flying for over 30 years and have never had our medicals denied. In September of 2002 we decided to switch over to the Sport Pilot. At that time there was very little information for us and learned through the Washington State DOT Aviation Div. that we could just switch over. Since then we have been flying our 46 Aeronca Champ on our drivers license and am current with our BFR. Any information concerning our situation would be appreciated. |

In an earlier question in this forum, an instrument rated private pilot asked if he could operate as a sport pilot in the various airspaces in the Los Angeles basin. The answer given was that the higher-level certificate would qualify this pilot to operate in all airspace classes.
Is this correct? According to §91.131(b)(2), solo student, sport, and recreational pilot operations are not permitted at certain major airports, including Los Angeles International Airport.
Does this mean it is OK for a private pilot operating as a sport pilot to receive a clearance to fly in the Class B airspace surrounding LAX, so long as the pilot doesn’t operate at Los Angeles International Airport itself? |

I currently hold a Private Certificate and wish to operate as a Sport Pilot in my Experimental plane which fits the definition of a LSA. Because I've been a holder of a Private certificate, I already have the training to operate in Class D, C and B (with ATC clearance) airspace. Do I need an endorsement to operate in this airspace as a sport pilot? Additionally I was told that operating BENEATH Class B Airspace is not permitted. |
 |
Can a private pilot operating on sport pilot rules obtain a tailwheel rating in a aircraft that is not a sport aircraft? |
 |
I understand the argument and agree with the logic that a private pilot has been trained to a higher standard than a sport pilot therefore a private pilot should be able to exercise sport pilot privileges. However, I can find nothing in the regulations supporting this theory. In fact FAR 61.303 states when operating as a sport pilot "...You must also comply with requirements in other subparts of this part that apply to your certificate and the operation you conduct." My understanding of this would say that if you are a private pilot(but not officially a sport pilot) you must follow private pilot requirements which would include having a current medical. Is there any documentation to support this dilema either way? I am not an EAA member, but I am a concerned CFI and I appreciate your assistance. |

 |
I'm a CFI who's giving a BFR to a private pilot who is using his driver's license as a medical and operating under the sport pilot rules. Do I hold the candidate to the standards set forth in the Private Pilot Practical Test Standards or the Sport Pilot Practical Test Standards? Also, does this mean that the the candidate can no longer use the radio to enter class D airspace without a specific endorsement from me, even though he's been operating in the class D as a former private pilot? |

I am currently a student pilot, working on my Sport Pilot ticket. Although I live in Georgia, I was hoping to fly my Experimental Ikarus C22 in the area of Cecil county, in North Maryland. Over the holidays, I spoke to a guy at Cecil County Airport (58M) who tells me that I must finish the ADIZ training before FEB 08, 2009. Do I need to have my Sport Pilots License before I take that training ? What happens to pilots in that area who do their training after Feb 08, 2009? |

We hold a Sport Pilot CFI for WSCL rating. We are going for the WSCL Private pilot rating. There seems to be some confusion as to the training hours we can use. We both have Private pilot training from years ago. One examiner says we can use these training hours and another tells us we cannot. Our understanding was that those hours were good indefinately. Can we use these privat pilot training hours toward this rating. EAA #679808 and 679807 Thank you |

There are several FAQs related to mine but none that answer my specific question, so here goes :
I have a Private Pilots License but am not current (have not flown for years). I understand that I need a valid Flight Review in order to operate as a sport pilot. I do not want to go to the expense of doing this in a certified GA aircraft. Can I get a flight from my instructor on the LSA aircraft and have it count for LSA and GA? |
 |

I hold a Private Pilot license with Airplane-SEL rating and have an expired medical (haven't flown since 1973) All of my flying was done in a tricycle gear aircraft. I'm thinking of building and flying a Sonex (with a tail wheel) at the Sport Pilot level. To fly at the Sport Pilot level, what do I need to do to be legal other than having a current flight review and my state drivers license? Also, does the flight review need to be taken in a tail wheel aircraft?
Thank you.

I currently hold an ATP, commercial ASEL, MEL, instrument, private pilot glider, Sport Pilot CFI Powered parachute and Sport Pilot WSC. I have over 20,000 total logged hours and owned a Stinson 103 that I flew for 10 years until getting into light sport aircraft. Must I have all of the aeronautical experience requirements of 61.109 to get a private pilot with PPC and WSC catagory? The requirements for the additional cross country seems redundant. I know how to navigate. I also know how to operate out of a tower controlled airport. Did the FAA forget that there might be vastly experienced pilots that may want to get private pilot privileges for PPC and WSC? What kind of things would be taught on the cross country training? |
 |
I am a instrument rated private pilot, not current. I am interested in flying the two-seat powered parachutes, but all of the language I have been reading says they are "trainers" only. I have yet to see any language that would indicate that I can fly with a passenger for pleasure. Is that not legal? And then does that also mean that this aircraft must be registered with the FAA by next January? Finally, how do I convert my current experience to becoming an instructor, I do not have PPC experience prior to 2004. Thank you. |

I am an ATP Pilot and have about 7000 hours of total time with most of it in 135 charter jets. I have a two seat, amphibious trike that I was successful in getting the e-lsa N# approved last winter but have not yet flown off the 5 hours required. I have not yet received formal instruction in the trike to add the category to my ATP license so I believe I can't legally fly it now. What type of instructor do I need to find to be able to do the category add on and seeing that I can't fly my unique model of amphib trike with pax until the 5 hours, can I fly in any trike with an instructor (possibly theirs) to get the rating or does it have to be an amphib and model specific? |

I am a Comm Airplane pilot and ATP Helicopter with CFI/II. I wanted to get my Sport Pilot Gyro by going to 2 different CFIs and doing a proficiency check. It was my understanding that with that endorsement I would have full privileges as a Sport Pilot to fly any LSA Gyro and would be able to fly into class b, c and d airspace since I already hold a private or better certificate. My CFI for gyroplanes is telling me even with my certificates, if I get a sport pilot endorsement I will need a signoff for each specific class b, c and d airspace I want to fly in and I will only be able to fly the specific aircraft I did the proficiency check in. |

If one holds a Commercial Pilot Certificate with Glider category & class rating and begins training for a sport pilot cert. - do they need a student sport pilot cert. to solo the LSA? It seems that 61.31(d) would apply, and they would only need a logbook endorsement. Certainly this is the case for solo in a different cat. & class other than light sport. |

While flying under sport pilot rules, FAR 61.315(b)(13) states you can't fly "without visual reference to the surface". Some CFI's are interpreting this to mean "No VFR above the clouds". That seems overly restrictive (especially for rated instrument pilots flying under light sport) and not necessarily the same. I can be above FEW, SCT, and maybe even BKN clouds and maintain ground reference. Which interpretation is correct? |
